Rotherham Inter-schools Climbing Competition

On Wednesday 2nd March 2016 the annual Rotherham Inter-schools Climbing Competition was held on the Clifton School climbing wall. The competition centred around each student’s performance in completing 12 boulder problems set to test the participants climbing skills and technique.

The competition was split into 2 age groups, Key Stage 3 (Y7 – Y9) and Key Stage 4 (Y10 & Y11). Within these age categories was a girls competition and a boys competition. There was also an award for the best school performance. In all 28 students from across Rotherham competed showing a high level of skill and ability across the board.

The winner of the Key Stage 4 Boys competition was Dominik Baluch from Clifton School. Incredibly Dominik completed all 12 of the boulder problems in half the allocated time, scoring the maximum 10 points on each climb (total points: 120). This was an outstanding achievement for Dominik having only been attending a weekly climbing club since late September 15.

The Winner of the Key Stage 4 girls category was Tala Hepburn from Wickersley School. Tala is a talented climber having competed in the National Foundry Bouldering Open and placing 10th in her category . Tala won with a score of 110 points, narrowly beating Chloe Wright of Brinsworth School by just 2 points.

In the Key Stage 3 category Georgia Bowman secured a comfortable first place position 32 points ahead of her closest rival, Whilst Matthew Reed and Harry Wood fought a tight contest for first place in the boys competition. It was close right to the end despite Matthew having a significant high advantage. In the end first place went to Matthew. Well done to both.

Little Shop of Horrors

After months of preparation and rehearsals the Little Shop of Horrors performance went down a treat last week. The acting, singing, dancing, live band, set, lighting, props and costumes all working seamlessly together in this musical bonanza.

The musical, about a man-eating plant who takes over the world, was greatly received. Our cast included students from Years 8, 9 and 10 and performed excellently in three performances over two days, including a matinee to local visiting primaries who described the show as ‘excellent’, ‘very entertaining’ and asked if they ‘could come and see more shows like this one’.

Audiences left smiling from ear to ear after laughing, crying and being wowed by the great acting of the principle characters and the uplifting chorus numbers. All staff and students involved are looking forward to the next show already….watch this space for more information!

Pupils shine at Music Festival

We took some very talented musicians to the Wickersley Music Festival last week to compete against Rawmarsh and Wickersley.  Although it was a long night, there were excellent performances from all three schools, making the role as judge really difficult.  Our pupils were a credit to the school and have once again raised the bar in their conduct and quality of performance.

Results:
Soul Band came 2nd in the Ensemble category.

Emily Wilkinson came 2nd in the Seniors category.

Jan Karala won the Open Category against Y11, 12 and 13 pupils from Rawmarsh and Wickersley!
