STEM Trip

On Thursday 10th November some of our budding young Y9 Scientists and Engineers were invited to take part in a STEM activity day at the AMRC in Sheffield, with staff from many different engineering institutes laying on sessions. Great fun was had by all and the day was both educational, and an eye opener for the extremely well behaved students into the various different ways engineering is used in the world around us.

One of the highlights of the day came in the 1st activity Clifton students took part in, the Bloodhound Racers. A competition where the students got into groups of 2-3 and where asked to design and make small race kart with the aim to see who’s kart could travel the furthest on one balloon of thrust. The Clifton students approached the task with all the creativity and determination that I would expect from them, and this was rewarded when the Clifton team ‘TEAM ELLIE’ on their final attempt of the session raced past the other schools to take 1st place!!! A video of this amazing run can be seen on the Clifton DT twitter page – @clifton_dt.
Another high point came in the very last activity of the day where students were asked to design and make the highest, and most cost effective multi-story building could that would stand up without falling over (out of Lego of course). Again the Clifton students were a credit to the school putting masses of effort and thought into the task and coming out with maybe not the most cost effective building but taking the award for the highest building of the day with their building reaching an impressing 86 levels when finished.

Fun was had by all throughout the day and both staff and students took ideas, skills, and thoughts away from the day that hopefully can be used in school and in their wider lives. The students where extremely well behaved throughout the day and put all their effort into the activities, again showing themselves to be a credit to the school.

Careers Day

Students in Y11 recently had a hugely successful day working alongside professionals representing a wide range of employment sectors and post 16 training providers. All students experienced a mock interview with an employer and attended workshops plus sessions on applying for college using resources such as UCAS Progress.

‘Rotherham and North Notts Training’ offered students a workshop on apprenticeships and students and staff from Rotherham College ran a much appreciated session on ‘Stepping up to Success’ as students move on to college. Ambassadors from ‘HEPP’ gave the students an insight in to Higher Education.

It was a very busy but informative day for the students and helped set them on their way for progress after competing Year 11. Thank you to all the visitors who helped to make it ‘real’ for the students. We are grateful to them for sharing their knowledge and experience and inspiring students as they plan for the future.
