Employment

Thinking of looking for a job when you have finished sixth form? There are some schemes aimed specifically at school leavers who have finished their A levels, or others who look for school leavers generally.

It is worth checking the websites of individual organisations to see if they offer such schemes. Don’t forget about apprenticeships as an option – this would allow you work and continue to study at the same time. Some employers even offer the opportunity for apprentices to pursue university qualifications whilst working at the same time.

Self-employment is also an option to consider, and there is lots of help available to young people wishing to start their own business.

Useful Employment Links:

Apprenticeships

  • Apprenticeships are a great option if you want to earn and learn at the same time.
  • Apprenticeships combine employment with ‘on-the-job’ training to enable you to learn new skills and gain qualifications whilst also developing your workplace skills and earning a wage.
  • Apprenticeships can cover a whole range of sectors including accountancy, animal care, web design, customer service, hairdressing, engineering, plumbing and many more!

Useful Links for Apprenticeships:

Volunteering

Voluntary work can be a great way to gain skills and experience in a particular area of work, meet new people and contribute to the local community. Voluntary opportunities exist in many different areas of work – there is sure to be one to suit you! Please be aware that some voluntary roles may have a minimum age requirement.

Useful Links for Volunteering:

University

Lots of people choose to continue their education at university once they have completed their A levels.  All university applications are made through UCAS, and you can search through thousands of course choices on the UCAS website.

Useful University Links:

Gap Year

A gap year between sixth form and university can be used to gain work experience, do voluntary work, travel, or a combination of all three! If you are unsure of what you want to study at university, a gap year can also give you some more time to research your options and make a decision.
