Physical Education

Key Stage 4: Why study physical education ?

This GCSE is primarily for you to allow you to make full use of your expertise in the subject area of physical education to gain a GCSE qualification. This can not only go towards contributing toward your aim of achieving higher grade passes in GCSE subjects but could also start you on a career path in physical education and sport through A’ Level PE and degree level sports subjects.

What will I study?

You will have to study a number of theory aspects which will form the basis of your knowledge to be able to answer questions set in the written examination, but these topics should also help you to become more competent in your assessed practical performance. The theory you will be covering is designed specifically for you to be able to apply it to the other aspects of the course; from helping you to fully understand the body systems which contribute to physical performance, right through to helping you perform a different role such as an official.

You will learn all about such things as:

How the body works
Training
Factors affecting participation and performance in sport
Health and well-being
Leisure and recreation
Diet

How will I be assessed?

    • 60% of the course is assessed practically via four different sports tailored to your ability and interests including kayaking and climbing.
    • 40% of the course is assessed via a one and a half hour written exam.

What skills will I need?

Competent ability across four is required and the ability to understand and apply theory knowledge to exam questions.

What happens in lessons?

One of your lessons will be a practical lesson whilst your theory lesson will be based around active tasks linked to sporting contexts.
