Year 11 Football Against Wickersley

We put in our best footballing performance of the season today in a fine 2-1 win against a well organised Wickersley team.
We started much the better of the two sides and our quick passing game was causing danger every time we went forward. Strangely it was through route one that we carved out the first chance of the game. A high looping ball into the penalty area saw Connor Coady bravely challenge the home Goalkeeper but his header bounced agonisingly wide.

Connor went close again forcing a smart save from the Wickersley number one before Henrik Santana drilled a low effort narrowly off target. At the back Brendan Walker and captain Declan Avill were marshalling the defence as we made sure we avoided the sucker punch.

Our dominance finally paid off when we gained a free kick outside the penalty area. Brendan strode up from the back and duly dispatched a “knuckleball” strike in off the crossbar. It was his first goal of the season and a really good strike.

We continued to control the game although there was a moment of panic when the Wickersley forward got behind our back line and rounded Shafique Rafique (deputising in goal). Thankfully the angle was just too tight and we survived to lead 1-0 at the break.

The second half kicked off with us taking the game to the home team and once more looking the more dangerous. Connor who had looked sharp all morning finally got the goal his running deserved when he latched onto a great header by Amaan Ghani and lifted the ball over the keeper to double our advantage.

Faisail Khary was unlucky not to make it 3 when he struck the post from outside the area but we realised we still had work to do when Wickersley capitalised on a loose ball in our area and gave themselves a foothold in the game.

We did an excellent job of protecting the lead and seeing the game out with our midfield trio of Louis Waterhouse, Henrik Santana and Jose Santana superb throughout. Jose was our man of the match with an excellent display of powerful, skillful running from the middle of the park.
A very enjoyable morning for all involved.
