Top 40 Accelerated Reader 2015-2016

All Time Top 40 – 24/05/2016

As we approach Rollover, Madena’s place at Number 1 seems unshakeable.  But what about the rest of the top spots?  Hailie climbs 4 places this week to make it into the top 10.  Deniz is our highest climber this week, with Khurum, Jenna and Uzaira also making progress.   A big “well-done” to them, and to Anisha who squeezes back into the chart this week as our only new entry.

If you would like to know how where to check your own word count, or find out how many words there are in your current reading book – just ask in the library!

RockSchool 2016

Well done to all the students involved with this years RockSchool 2016 event.

The Rockschool concert took place on Thursday 12th May, organised by musicians in Y11 as part of their Rockschool Music Practitioners course.

The pupils had to work as a team to plan, promote and hold an event. Pupils from all year groups took part and there were performances from curricular and extra curricular groups.

The Y11s raised a grand total of £174 from ticket sales and refreshments.

You can see all the photos on the performing arts network site.

Rock School – Cast your votes…

They are currently planning a concert to take place on Thursday 12th May from 6.30pm in the performance hall. Pupils are working in four teams to plan, promote and run the event. Each team has been allocated 40 tickets to sell – the success of their promotion will be judged on how many seats they fill.

Tickets are priced at £3 for adults, £2 for secondary school pupils and free for under 11s. Please email the Music Department on to book, stating which poster you prefer so we know which team will reserve your tickets.

Battle of the Bands 2016

Congratulations to all of the musicians who performed in last weeks battle of the bands contest at Clifton Community School – they really were fantastic! It takes time and a lot of hard work to become a musician, and guts to stand on stage and perform to a room full of people – the kids did themselves and staff proud. The atmosphere backstage was brilliant. We have some very talented pupils, from across all schools!

A review from one of our judges Mr Hudson:
“Music has the ability to make performers and audience happier and more relaxed; it’s able to test a performer’s ability and confidence so it builds character; and, more often than not, it’s a team effort creating friendships that last, sometimes for life.

On Thursday May 5th at Clifton school, a full audience was treated to all of the above with 5 VERY talented young ladies winning through against high ability competition. Alfie heard performed 3 songs whilst the votes were counted, and he out Sheeranned Ed Sheeran!

Tremendous, magnificent, heartwarming. Outstanding. All overused words. On that Thursday at one of our schools and involving young people from all of those school, all of these words, AND MORE, apply.

Battle of the Bands is here to stay.

Simon Cowell!! Who’s he?!!!”

Well done everyone!

The winners were:
In 1st place – Shockwave (Y7 band from Wickersley)
In 2nd place – Mountain of Diamonds (Jan Karala, Hussen Mulhem, Dayna Heald)
and in 3rd place – Unexpected (Y7 group from Wicks/Aston/Brinsworth)

Year 9 & 10 Cricket Match

Yesterday evening Year 9 & 10 boys visited Winterhill school in lovely sunshine.

We were put into bat first and started in determined fashion. Dawood Rafiq and Haidar Ali started building up our total. Unfortunately this didn’t last as Haidar was caught and bowled.

Josh Woodcock came into bat and steadied the ship while Dawood remained a constant presence. Josh made 13 before succumbing to a catch. Farad Qanbari managed to make a further 9. The star of the show though was Dawood who knocked off an impressive 42 runs (including nine 4’s) before he too was caught. We managed a good total of 92 runs.

Winterhill started with a faster run rate than we had managed and for a time threatened our total. Once more Dawood impressed by bowling some sensible overs and limiting the hosts tally. Nathan Murr came in to bowl and took 2 wickets in his first over. This appeared to break the resolve of Winterhill who didn’t seem to have many other run scoring batsmen. They finished on 74 for 4 with Farad taking a wicket with the very last ball of the match.

Another pleasant evening and once more a pleasing result. Well done!
