Key Stage 4: Why study GCSE Drama?

If you love performing and working with others to create performance, this course is for you. Through script work and devising projects you will top up and enhance your drama skills and knowledge previously learnt in Key Stage 3 and work towards a GCSE qualification.
This course offers progression into many areas and career pathways. For performance, this course offers the skills needed to study ‘A’ levels and BTEC courses.

What will I study?

Acting techniques, drama practitioners and performance skills.

What happens in lessons?

In some lessons you will be directed by your teacher in performance work. In others you will be directing yourselves so you will need to have patience, be a good listener and be able to take direction as well as use your own initiative in performance.

What skills will I need?

Performance skills are essential. Evaluative and analytical writing skills will be developed. You need to be able to work with others, think creatively and work independently.

How will I be assessed?

    • Unit 1 Devised Practical Performance (Controlled Assessment – 60%)
        • The performance element of this unit ends with a final performance which you will have prepared over a full term with your allocated group. This is assessed by your teacher and another member of staff.
        • You will complete a Written Report documenting your development and performance process. This will include information about how your ideas came together, how you created your character and an evaluation of your final performance.
    • Unit 2 Performance from a Text (Formal Performance Examination – 20%)
        • This is a practical unit. You will work in your allocated group to learn lines, create a character, direct and perform a section of a published play. This is assessed by an external examiner, usually in April/May of Y11.
    • Unit 3 Written Examination (Formal Written Examination – 20%)
        • This is a written examination, taking place in June/July of Y11. You will complete an evaluation of your final performance from Unit 2. You will also write about a set text you will have previously studied in lessons with your teacher.
