Why study MFL?

First of all study language because you enjoy it! Speaking and learning how to write in a foreign language is challenging but great fun and rewarding. Future careers? The opportunities are endless.. we now live in a society where your knowledge of a foreign languages is an excellent skill to have whether you work in a bank dealing with your day to day customers to working for the government dealing with highly confidential incidents…exciting opportunities!!!

What will I study?

You will study a variety of topics including talking and writing about you use media such as mobile phones and social media, talking about your interests in music, learning to form arguments for and against issues to describing your imaginary school/family. Within all topics you will develop a range of skills; you will learn how to read, write and speak and listen and understand a foreign language without having to know every word. You will be able to communicate with others with confidence.

What happens in lessons?

You will be taught how to use your skills most effectively and given a variety of ways to practise your skills. You will complete a variety of activities in Speaking, writing, listening and reading regularly.

How will I be assessed?

20% Reading exam

20% Listening exam

30% writing Controlled assessment

30% Speaking Controlled Assessment

The controlled assessments are completed in class with guidance from your subject teacher.

What skills will I need?

You need to be able to work with some independence (e.g using a dictionary) as well as be able to work well with a group in class- as this really helps develop your speaking and writing skills in particular. You have to be able speak in front of others.

You need to have a good level of knowledge and understanding of literacy in English.
