Sports Round Up!

This week has seen our annual Sports week take place in PE lessons and inform time. The theme was based around disability in sport with pupils being given the opportunity to experience some different forms of Sport. Here is a brief overview of some of the activities that have taken place:

Form tutor time activity:
This took the form of a blindfolded challenge where a bean bag was placed in various locations in form rooms with students guiding one another to retrieve the bean bag.

Assembly:
Mr Skirrow did an excellent job of promoting the values of Sport and teamwork to support the week.

Curriculum:
Usual lessons were collapsed with students given the chance to play Blindfolded Football, Sit down Volleyball, and Blindfolded Dance. Although the message of the week was a serious one, we were provided with plenty of laughs throughout as challenges were responded to with varying amounts of success! It was particularly nice to see the students gain an understanding of the day-to-day difficulties that some people face and appreciate their own fortune.

Break time:
Each day, a different year group was given the opportunity to come to the Sports Hall at break and attempt a blindfolded Obstacle course. The students were allowed to guide one another verbally in order to negotiate a series of obstacles and tasks. This proved to be very popular, especially with the younger year groups.

Extra-Curricular:
We have had a full programme of activities once more:

Monday: Climbing Club at Cranworth Road on the Climbing wall and Girls Football Training at Middle Lane

Wednesday: Girls Rounders Training – Boys Football Training – Y8 Boys Football Fixture v Rawmarsh

Thursday: Running Club in Clifton Park

Friday: Boys Football Fixtures away at Oakwood for Y7, 8, and Y10. (All three sides were involved in very closely fought games).

On top of this, 6 of our students were taken out of school to compete in the finals of the Greater Sheffield Schools Climbing Competition. We had previously won our qualifying round to make the finals. We finished a highly creditable fourth place on the day and 5 of our 6 team members were from Y7 and were competing against Y8/9 students from other schools. Valerie Tulejova won a chalk bag for her individual outstanding effort.

The week has been a success due to the manner in which so many of our students have bought into what we have offered. There has been a really positive feeling in PE and we want to make sure that this continues.
