The Y10 Drama and Dance students were invited to watch Hairspray at Sheffields’ Lyceum Theatre on Thursday 1st Feb. Some of the cast were straight out of the original London stage show, so we knew it was going to be a good one. We arrived in plenty of time for ice creams and minstrels (that was just Mrs Bittles-Kincaid).
Hairspray certainly had all the energy and buzz expected of a Broadway show. Some of our girls got very excited when Seeweed threw out some of his amazing shapes on stage. It certainly was an all singing all dancing fabulous experience celebrating the changes of times and acceptance. The show was full of vibrant colours, amazing dancing and spine tingly voices.
Captain Tempest and his crew, aboard the Albatross Survey Flight Nine, find themselves drawn into a meteor storm and stranded on the plant D‘Illyria where they are reunited with an old friend Doctor Prospero. All is not as it seems as Prospero, having been betrayed by his science partner and estranged wife, Gloria, has created the formula ‘X’ Factor. Tempest and his crew must work against time to make sure their ship is saved using the powers of Prospero’s trusty robot, Ariel before they can escape the clutches of the monster of the mind that could destroy them all.
It’s a tale of love, deceit, fear and hope and the cast have worked tirelessly to put their latest work together. This high energy show features a rocking repertoire of music from the 50s and 60s, roller-skates, a monstrous dancing crew and is littered with Shakespeare’s best loved quotes and limericks.
Guaranteed to have you laughing, crying and dancing in your seat.
