On Wednesday 24th September, the Year 9 Football team booked their place in the quarter final of the Rotherham Schools Cup with an impressive 7-2 win over Winterhill.
Though Clifton initially fell behind, the lead lasted a matter of seconds as Danny continued his hot vein of form in front of goal by levelling matters. Clifton seemed to get a foothold in the game but deputy keeper Lewis handled outside the area, with the free kick taker placing the ball expertly inside the keeper’s right hand post. Back came Clifton to equalise for a second time and Elton fired it home after Danny hit the post with a thunderbolt of a shot. Kian was making some great runs from Midfield and was on hand to assist Danny’s second of the game as he was in the right place at the right time to put Clifton into the lead for the first time. Elton was once again proving a menace on the right hand side and seemed to give Clifton a key goal just before the break.
Half-time saw a substitution at right-back, as the reliable Kieran was replaced by Brandon. Brandon’s introduction put the seal on an already solid Clifton defensive performance, with Matt commanding the back line well. Clifton started the second half a little cagily but soon settled down into their stride and played some flowing football as the midfield moved the ball well. Damian was breaking play up fantastically for Kian and Ronan to pour forward, and one of Ronan’s mazy runs led to Clifton’s fifth goal, which he managed to finish brilliantly.
Danny was looking a great threat as ever, but it was Luke Rodwell who fired home the goal of the game with a great strike from all of 25 yards leaving the keeper with no chance. Clifton continued to apply the pressure with Lewis’s goal never looking under any real threat, and Elton topped off a hat-trick in style as he completed a 7-2 victory with a delicate finish to ensure Clifton’s passage to the quarter final of the Rotherham Schools Cup!
